The practice of organic farming plays a significant role in the conservation of water and soil. Equally important is the impact it has on reducing pollution.
Organic farming offers sound method of growing plants and ensures no chemicals are added into the feeds of the animals. These are the main differences between products grown organically and those grown with conventional method; Instead of using chemical fertilizers to induce rapid growth, organic farming utilizes natural fertilizers such as composts. The use of insecticides in keeping pests and diseases at bay is replaced with the use of traps, selective inclusion of beneficial insects, and maintaining clean growing environment for the crops. Organic farming also operates by rotating crops to control weeds, rather than pouring chemical herbicides into the soil. When it comes to the animals, organic method relies on giving organic feed, providing outdoor spaces, and ensuring good diet along with clean surroundings.
How much better is it then to consume organic products?
According to researches and surveys, products grown organically and conventionally have no pronounced differences in terms of nutrients contents. The ideal on organic farming is the respect it lends to the people’s health and to the environment. It is relieving to know that there is access towards achieving better health. Some researches suggested that it was a matter of putting less and getting less. By putting less chemicals into the crops, the public are getting less exposure to them. However, it can sometimes feel like a pressure to follow this ideal. Organic products are more expensive compared to their conventional counterparts. What appears to be physically rewarding seems to be financially distressing. Ideally, one would live a healthy life and be kind to the environment by consuming organically grown products. But how much and how specific does one need to follow? People have different priorities in life, depending on their circumstances; families, work, where they live. What is important for some, may not be important for others, except for the fact that we all want to be healthy. As much as we fully understand the advantages of eating healthy foods bearing the promise of sound farming, more often than not, when price comes to play, we reconsider and we opt for the second best choice there is. It is a harmless decision as long as we are convinced that we would not jeopardize our health.
